Position Betting

If you wish to be successful at poker position betting is an absolute must. Let’s face it the cards are not always going to be there and you must have a way to keep your stack from wavering.

Any time you are the last person with the opportunity to raise you are in position. However, you should only steal if there are only a few people left. This tends to work the best preflop or after the first flop.

The basic idea is it checks around to you and you bet a significant amount which makes everyone fold, you steal the blinds.

There are different scenarios of this that should be discussed. Let’s say that there are three people left. The first player has raised preflop to 100(BB50), the second has just called and you have called.

The flop comes out and it is less than amazing - 852 rainbow. If you are playing with good players they should not have called the first raise unless they had a worthy hand. Because they called your raise, they most likely had strong starting hands which included face cards that do not appear on the flop here.

Place your bet and walk away with the money. There are times that the first or second person will call you or even come over the top on you. This could mean that they either (a) think you are bluffing or (b) feel they still have the best hand.

Remember they could have always raised you with pocket 8’s and have hit their trips. You should probably just get out if they come over the top. You must exercise caution and leave your money behind. However, in the long run this technique will definitely leave you ahead.
